Exploring the Arboretum
Section Hoffman is characterized by a canopy of mature post
oaks (Quercus stellata– pictured here), a species well adapted to dry, upland conditions. These
trees are part of the oak-hickory woodlands that once dominated much of
Missouri’s native landscape. Today, Bellefontaine actively works to conserve
and protect threatened and endangered oak species. This section reflects both
the natural heritage of the region and our ongoing stewardship efforts. To

G. Pavyer
Coping for Family Lot | Lot #2193
Lot 2193 still includes the fully coped family lot for James
G. Pavyer, owner of the St. Louis Type Foundry. The main marker has the
iconography of the Open Book, with the words “At Rest.” This lot, in the
future, will be returned to the look of an age long passed. Particular plant
material will denote the eleven individuals laid to rest in this family lot.

Willard B. Shelp
World War II | Lot
#5038
Willard B. Shelp was an early promoter of St. Louis County
subdivisions and expansions after World War II. As a young boy, he attended the
Louisiana Purchase Exposition and was a World War I veteran. Willard donated
his body to Washington University School of Medicine, so his monumentation is a
cenotaph (a memorial without human remains).
